Description
The collection of the National Gallery of Canada includes Canadian paintings, prints and drawings, contemporary art, Inuit art, and a media arts collection. The European, American and Asian Collections consist of over 400 works of art ranging from the Middle Ages to the 1960's. The European and American prints and drawings collections contain more than 1,700 drawings and 9,500 prints, which include a large number of 19th century French prints. The modern art department is comprised of European and American paintings, sculptures and installation pieces from about 1900-1975.

In accordance with the Guidelines Governing the Unlawful Appropriation of Objects during the Nazi Era, adopted by the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) and Canadian Art Museum Directors Organization (CAMDO), the National Gallery of Canada is conducting research on the provenance of works in its collection during the period from 1933 to 1945. Their website includes a listing of European and American paintings and sculptures that have gaps, or no provenance listed, for the period between 1933 and 1945. The purpose of the list is to open further inquiry into these works and to elicit any further information on their provenance. The site will be updated in the future. The list includes the title of the work, the nature of its support (for paintings or material for sculpture), the signature, date, inscriptions in certain cases, and known provenance (in chronological order).
