Title
Study Mission on the Spoliation of Jews in France: Mattéoli Commission Final Report (Mission d'étude sur la spoliation des Juifs de France. Rapport Général)

Date
The Final Report was released in April 2000.

Description
The Committee was set up by a decree of 25 March 1997 issued by the Prime Minister Alain Juppé, who appointed Mr. Jean Mattéoli as its chairman. The Committee's mission was to:

  • Research the fate of the confiscated items
  • Determine whereabouts
  • Draw up an inventory of seized assets
  • Make proposals to the government on the future of these assets

In April 2000 the Commission published its 3,000-page report, which states that $1.3 billion worth of Jewish assets were looted by both the Vichy regime and the German authorities. The report also mentions that 90 percent of plundered assets were restituted after the war. (But this statement cannot refer to the 100,000 looted art objects, of which 60,000 were restituted to France). The report concluded with several recommendations, including setting up a foundation with the objective of keeping alive the memory of those who perished and learning lessons from these events.
