Research into Nazi-confiscated cultural property in the archive's collection
The archive states that it did not participate in the acquisition of looted cultural property.
Its collections consist predominantly of state and municipal records. It holds a limited number of private archival records, whose legitimate acquisition is documented.

In recent years the archive has made efforts to elucidate the processes of persecution and to assist with the identification of the previous owners of looted cultural property. For instance, a member of staff has undertaken detailed research into the archive's records which document the confiscation of personal goods due for shipment abroad and post-war efforts at restitution.

The archive also supports the search for looted cultural property by undertaking research into specific archival records (those of the Oberfinanzdirektion and the Landesamt für Wiedergutmachung) and by opening up its records in accordance with the Joint Declaration by the Federal Government, the Länder (Federal States) and the National Associations of Local Authorities on the tracing and return of Nazi-confiscated art, especially Jewish property of December 1999.
