Stiftung Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen Schloß Gottorf (Schloß Gottorf Foundation of Schleswig-Holstein State Museums)

Established in 1950, the Stiftung Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen Schloß Gottorf (Schloß Gottorf Foundation of Schleswig-Holstein State Museums) encompasses eight museums. The Landesmuseum für Kunst und Kulturgeschichte and the Archäologisches Landesmuseum, both of which are today housed in Gottorf Castle, were located in Kiel until 1945 when their buildings were destroyed by fire.

Research into Nazi-confiscated cultural property in the archive's collection
The Foundation has undertaken systematic research into its inventories between 1933 and 1945. A number of sixteenth and seventeenth century books purchased in Holland were acquired in 1941 and returned in 1947. The Foundation's investigations are limited because many objects were acquired from art dealers and the provenance can only be traced in the rarest cases.
