Research into Nazi-confiscated works of art in the museum's collection
In 2000 the Hamburger Kunsthalle appointed a researcher to undertake systematic research into the provenance of works which entered the museum's collection after 1933. To date the research has not been made public.

In February 2002, the Hamburger Kunsthalle organised a symposium 'Die eigene Geschichte: Provenienzforschung an deutschen Kunstmuseen im internationalen Vergleich'('One's Own History: Provenance Research in German Art Museums, an International Comparison'). A brief overview of the symposium and a list of the presentations is available on the museum's website under Ausstellungen/Archiv (in German only).
