Coordination Office for Lost Cultural Assets (Koordinierungsstelle für Kulturverluste)

Title
Coordination Office for Lost Cultural Assets (Koordinierungsstelle für Kulturgutverluste)

Description
From 1994 to 2000, this agency was called the Coordination Office of the Federal States for the Return of Cultural Property (Koordinierungsstelle der Länder für die Rückführung von Kulturgütern) and dealt with cultural property from German institutions relocated during the war. Following the Washington Holocaust Conference Principles on Nazi-Confiscated Art (1998) and the Joint Declaration by the Federal Government, the Länder (Federal States) and the National Associations of Local Authorities on the tracing and return of Nazi-confiscated art, especially Jewish property, of December 1999, its brief was enlarged to encompass Nazi-looted art. Consequently, it was renamed the Coordination Office for Lost Cultural Assets.

The Coordination Office publishes information posted by institutions or individuals searching for objects and also publishes reports by institutions which hold objects they suspect may have been looted by the Nazis. The Coordination Office is situated in Magdeburg, at the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of Saxony-Anhalt (Kultusministerium des Landes Sachsen-Anhalt) and is supported by both the Federal Government and the Länder (Federal States).

Both the Coordination Office and the Federal Commissoner for Cultural and Media Affairs can also be contacted if, in the course of their research, institutions should come across cultural property which was brought into Germany from other countries for reasons related to the war and which has remained undiscovered until now. (Guidelines (February 2001) concerning the implementation of the Joint Declaration of the Federal Government, the Länder (Federal States) and the National Associations of Local Authorities on the tracing and return of Nazi-confiscated art, especially Jewish property of December 1999, p. 6).
