Description
Kirk Askew (1903-1974) managed the New York branch of the London firm Durlacher Brothers in the 1920s. Durlacher Brothers was established in 1843 by Henry and George Durlacher. In 1937 Askew purchased the business which he ran from New York until c. 1969. Askew's personal papers include correspondence (c. 1943-45) with artists who were represented by the gallery and exhibition catalogues (c. 1928-67). The London records, dating from before Askew's time, were destroyed by George Durlacher prior to the sale.

The records of the New York branch of the Durlacher Brothers pertain to the management (1920-1937) and ownership (1937-1974) of Kirk Askew. They are divided into eight series:
Series I. Correspondence and appointment books from 1919-1973 (boxes 1-3)
Series II. Financial records from 1921-1971 (boxes 4-15)
Series III. Stock books from 1923-1969 (boxes 16-27)
Series IV. Assorted office files for the years c.1920-1964 (boxes 28-29)
Series V. Photographs (boxes 30-35*)
Series VI. Tchelitchew estate files for 1942-1973 (boxes 36-38)
Series VII. Scrapbooks from 1934-1953 (box 39)
Series VIII. Kirk and Constance Askew files (The Gallery director and his wife),
c.1929-1967 (boxes 40-42).
