Description
Pierre Matisse arrived in New York in 1924 and opened his gallery there in 1931. Before 1931 he worked as a European agent in partnership with the art dealer Valentine Dudensing. The art Pierre Matisse acquired in Europe was exhibited in Dudensing's gallery. He represented Miro, Chagall, Balthus, Dubuffet, Giacometti  and Yves Tanguy.

Records include correspondence with artists, clients, museum personnel, colleagues; records of gallery stock, purchases, sales, works of art accepted on consignment; exhibition records; bank and auditors' records; shipping records; business records; photographs of works of art. The gallery archives document, among other topics, the opening of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the arrival of emigré European artists fleeing the Nazis. Some of the artists represented through letters, biographical information, publicity, and commissions include: Balthus, Butler, Calder, Calliyannis, Carrington, Chagall, Dubuffet, Gabo, Giacometti, Gromaire, Le Corbusier, Miro, Riopelle, Saura, Severini, Tanguy, and Zao Wou-ki. The collection contains 833 manuscript letters between Henri and Pierre Matisse.
