Title
Miriam Weiner Routes to Roots Foundation

Description
The Routes to Roots Foundation was established in 1994 by Miriam Weiner, a leading genealogist who is also the author of Jewish Roots in Ukraine and Moldova (1997) and Jewish Roots in Poland (1999).

The goals of the Foundation are:

  • To survey, study, research, inventory and document Jewish material, archives and Judaica in Eastern European archives
  • To foster and promote the study and preservation of Jewish genealogical material
  • To assemble, catalogue, publish and disseminate information from the research and study of Jewish materials
  • To compile, maintain and update library/archive collections of Jewish historical, cultural and genealogical information
  • To sponsor educational events

The Foundation website contains ample research resources which may prove valuable even beyond the purposes of genealogical research. These comprise practical aids and auxiliary research tools, historical overviews, and travel information. Essays and listings on archival holdings in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova comprise sections excerpted from Jewish Roots in Poland and Jewish Roots in Ukraine and Moldova as well as new entries written by local archivists. Routes to Roots has also overseen the creation of an Eastern European Archival Database which includes Jewish civil records from archives in the countries of the former 'Pale of Settlement' (Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, Moldova and Ukraine).
