The Transfer of Jewish-owned Cultural Objects in the Italian Alpe Adria Region, Workshop, Lucca, Italy, 20-21 September 2017

The first International Workshop of the HERA project “Transfer of Cultural Objects in the Alpe Adria Region in the 20th Century” (TransCultAA) focuses on the Jewish-owned cultural property in the Italian Alpe Adria region. See www.transcultaa.eu for full details of the project, research team, events, etc.

As a geographic zone of transit, the Italian Alpe Adria region, broadly understood, was characterized by an intense displacement of cultural assets owned by Jews through confiscation, plunder and seizure by German and Italian authorities during WWII.

The TransCultAA project members will point out the complexity of the phenomenon at a transnational level. In particular, they will present and analyze the different administrative practices in the management of Jewish-owned heritage, investigate the institutions, organizations and networks, examine the trajectories of victims and perpetrators, and also try to document the objects present or in transition on the Italian territory. In doing so, the aim of the TransCultAA project is not only to trace the tangible movement of objects, but also their role as symbolic capital. Accordingly, alongside ‘high’ art also ‘low’ art and everyday objects – which all played a role in developing individual, collective and national identities – will be taken into account. Finally, multinational
members of TransCultAA will share the results of their recent and ongoing research projects, and recommend new approaches and paths for investigations in this field.

Within this setting of an international workshop, we invite scholars and researchers (either attached to universities, to museums, to cultural heritage institutions, authorities, or working independently, as freelancers) to submit proposals for a Poster Session and a Paper Session taking place on 20th-
21st September 2017 at IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy. The workshop language is English. Attendance is free, but please register your participation. The procedure for registration will be published on the IMT website.

It is recommended that a printed poster be no larger than 900mm wide and 1900mm high. Photographs, graphics and texts attached should also fit within this size.

The selected abstracts will be published on IMT Lucca website by September, 15. The organizers would certainly welcome the participation of presenters in the workshop, and in particular during the 60 minutes poster session in the afternoon of September, 20.
