WASHINGTON (JTA) -- Chabad-Lubavitch filed a motion against Russia in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Wednesday's move, first reported on the blog of Legal Times, comes in response to the country's withdrawal from a long-running lawsuit over the recovery of sacred books and manuscripts. Chabad alleges that Russia broke international law and can therefore be tried in U.S. courts.

Russia had already brought the matter to court with a motion to dismiss and an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, which then ruled that Chabad’s claim could go forward.http://jta.org/news/article/2009/07/30/1006906/chabad-asks-for-default-judgment-against-russia
