Title
Central Information Office of the Registration Service, Vienna (Zentrale Auskunft des Meldeservice, Wien)

Description
All residents in Austria are required to register with their district authorities. This used to be the responsibility of the police but was recently taken over by the City Administration. In March 2002, the former Central Registration Office (Zentralmeldeamt) moved from the Federal Police Headquarters (Bundespolizeidirektion) at Rossauer Lände 5 to its new location.

The Central Information Office of the Registration Service keeps the records of household registrations in Vienna since 1949. In March 2002 a new amending law (28. Bundesgesetz: Änderung des Meldegesetzes 1991, des Volkszählungsgesetzes 1980 und des Allgemeinen Sozialversicherungsgesetzes) of the Austrian Registration Law came into force under which the office is only allowed to issue historical data directly to the person concerned or to public authorities. It is no longer able to provide historical registration data to third parties, authorised or not.

The Central Information Office of the Registration Service can only provide information on the current registration details of a person. Enquiries made in person (with ID) at the municipal office cost 3 euros, enquiries by post cost 13 euros. It is essential to provide the first and last names and date of birth of the person(s) one is looking for and one of the following: nationality, place of birth, last address. Because all Austrian registration data since 2001 is now stored on a Central Register (Zentrales Melderegister - ZMR), enquiries for the whole of the country can be made at any district or municipal office. The Central Register is a database created in 2001 and active since March 2003, which is administered by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Interior Affairs.

For Household Registration data before 1949, contact the Registrations Archive (Meldearchiv) at the Vienna Municipal and Provincial Archives.
