Title
Kunst als Beute: Zur symbolischen Zirkulation von Kulturobjekten

Author
Edited by Sigrid Schade, Gottfried Fliedl, Martin Sturm

Date
2000

Description
This essay collection presents thirteen papers from two symposia on art looting and trophy art organised in Bremen and Linz in 1996. Both symposia were organised in connection with the presentation of the website and video installation 'Body Missing' by Canadian artist Vera Frenkel.

The collection looks at art looting and trophy art from a museological perspective. The introductory chapter presents the theoretical premise of the book which seeks to address the symbolic significance of looting and the construction of national myths in museums. The essays cover very diverse topics: iconoclasm during the French Revolution; the transfer of library collections as a cultural history phenomenon; sensationalist press coverage and the issue of the return of 'trophy art' from Russia through the example of the Priamos Treasure excavated by Heinrich Schliemann; the appropriation of Judaica by museums under National Socialism; German looting in the Soviet Union; British export controls between 1952 and 2000; cinematic imaginings of the 'Revenge of the Pharaoh' and anxiety regarding the problematic acquisition of Egyptian funerary artefacts; 'trophy art' and cultural life in Russia as illustrated by two exhibitions held at the Pushkin Museum (Moscow) in 1955 and 1996. The last five essays in the volume deal with contemporary art and the work of Vera Frenkel.
