Description
The Central Art Archives of the Finnish National Gallery house a comprehensive collection of material on Finnish art. The Central Art Archives consist of four distinct archives:

  • the Art History Archive, begun in 1889, which houses individual documents and collections pertaining to Finnish art history and art life
  • the Press Cuttings Archive, begun in 1897, which contains magazine and newspaper articles relating to Finnish art and art criticism
  • the Photographic Archive, which goes back to 1862, has an extensive collection of photographs of works owned by the Gallery and by various other bodies in Finland and abroad
  • the Sound Archive, containing recordings from 1960 on, and consisting in approximately one hundred and fifty recorded interviews with Finnish artists.

The Central Art Archives also include the Finnish National Gallery's Photographic Department and Library.

The archives are closed in July and visitors are advised to consult with the staff in advance.
