Research into Nazi-confiscated cultural property in
the archive's collection
A number of archivals material confiscated by the Gestapo were deposited at
the archive. These included the records of Frankfurt's Jewish community
and those of the Philantropin, a Jewish private school. They were destroyed
along with other materials when the archive burnt down in 1944.
The Municipal Archive is a research resource for a working group set up by the Frankfurt Department of Culture and Leisure. The working group is composed of representatives of the city’s cultural institutions and seeks to coordinate research into the confiscation of cultural property by the Nazis.
Research into cultural property missing from the archive
The building housing the archive was destroyed by fire in 1944. All records
not placed into wartime storage by that time were destroyed.
