The Reichsamt für Landesaufnahme in
Thüringen placed its map collection in storage at Friedrichroda and Greiz
(Thuringia) in 1945. Map collections stored at Friedrichsroda included material
from the Reichsamt für Landesaufnahme in Thüringen, but also from the main
Reichsamt für Landesaufnahme based in Berlin. In the immediate post-war period
map collections stored at Friedrichroda were removed by the US Armed Forces.
Several years later, some materials were returned to the successor of the Berlin
institution, the Institut für Kartographie und Geodäsie at Frankfurt am Main.
In May 1946 part of the Thuringia Land Surveying Office's map collection stored at Greiz, including copper printing plates of the 526-page Reymann Map (Reymann'sche Spezialkarte), was removed by the Soviet Administration. It is believed that the material was taken to the former Soviet Union, but its fate is not known. The Surveying Office has listed the missing maps on the Lost Art Internet Database (www.lostart.de ), the German website on looted cultural property.
