Research into cultural property missing from the library
The library is missing approximately 7,000 items as a result of wartime looting and destruction. In October 1943 part of the collection was placed in wartime storage in a potash mine in Wansleben (near Eisleben), from where much of it was looted in 1945. Although archival materials were returned in 1957, many of the near 7,000 library volumes are thought to remain in Russian collections. A list of the missing volumes and reproductions of the library's identification stamps can be consulted on the library's website.
