Author
Compiled by Wolfgang Scheffler and Diana Schulle, edited by Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V. and the Riga-Komitee der deutschen Städte, in cooperation with the Stiftung Neue Synagoge Berlin - Centrum Judaicum and the Memorial House of the Wannsee Conference

Date
2003

Description
This memorial book contains the names of the 31,000 Jews who were deported to the Baltic countries from November 1941 to the end of October 1942. Most were murdered on arrival.
The project was launched by the German Riga Committee which was founded in May 2000 on the initiative of the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V.). The Committee formed an alliance with the Latvian Brüderfriedhöfe Committee and the Austrian Red Cross to commemorate those who were murdered. On 30 November 2001, a memorial site was opened in the Bikernieki forest, a few kilometres from the Latvian capital. Most of the deportees were murdered in this forest; only about 1,200 survived. The memorial site was set up by the Volksbund on behalf of the German Federal Government, together with the German Riga Committee, and with the support of the Riga Initiative in Vienna. During the opening ceremony, representatives from the German towns belonging to the Riga Committee, as well as from the city of Vienna, deposited the names of their deportees. The aim was to give back names to the victims, and to ensure that they will be remembered.
