Description
The Nazis and Hungarian financial police took Baron Herzog's collection of artworks from his apartment in Budapest. Part of the collection (including works by Cranach, Van Dyck and El Greco) is now in the Hungarian National Gallery and the Museum of Fine Art, both in Budapest.
Baron Herzog's granddaughter, Martha Nierenberg, heir to the Herzog collection, has claimed the restitution of these artworks with the help of the Commission for Art Recovery in New York. On 20 October 2000 the Budapest court ruled that all but one of the 11 paintings claimed by Martha Nierenberg should be returned to her. The Hungarian government appealed against the ruling.
