Arthur Tooth & Sons, London and New York (Tate)

Copyright registers 1870-1924 and correspondence between Stanley Spencer and Arthur Tooth & Sons
Accession Number: TGA 8917

Arthur Tooth & Sons was a prominent art gallery founded in 1842 in London. It was active in the nineteenth- and twentieth centuries. Until the 1880s the firm concentrated on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British painting. After that date, it extended its stock to Old Masters and contemporary art. A New York branch was opened in the 1900s and closed in 1924.

The holdings include copyright registers between 1870 and 1924, correspondence between the firm and Stanley Spencer and a précis of that correspondence by Maurice Collis.
