The gallery, established by Hanns and Kate Schaeffer, specialised in Dutch and Flemish Old Master paintings and drawings. The Berlin gallery was open from 1925 to 1939, while the New York gallery ran from 1936 to the 1990s. The records are organized by inventory files, photographic documentation, albums and publications, and correspondence. The records cover Berlin (1925-1939) and New York (1939-1980) gallery activities, including correspondence (mostly 1950s-1980) client files (from the 1930s); inventories; photographs of art objects and sale records, expertise and provenance; and photographic albums and catalogues of gallery exhibitions.
New material received in December 2001 (including records of purchases, research notes, auction catalogues, photographs, letters of expertise, and business documents concerning post-WW II gallery business in Europe) has yet to be catalogued.
