The article is dedicated to the passion for art collecting which was in vogue among the representatives of the Jewish haute bourgeoisie of Budapest in the beginning of the 20th century. In the center of the investigation is the collection of Baron Mór Lipót Herzog who not only became one of the leading art collectors of Budapest but influenced the development of European artistic taste. The Jewish industrialist and banker played an instrumental role in the rediscovery and popularization of El Greco 

Konstantin Akinsha is an art historian and art journalist. Among his books are The Holy Place, (co-authored with Gregorii Kozlov, Sylvia Hochfield, New Heaven: Yale University Press, Fall 2007); AAM Guide for Provenance Research, (co-authored with Nancy Yeide and Amy Walsh, Washington DC: American Association of Museums, 2001); Beautiful Loot: Soviet Plunder of European Art Treasures, (co-authored with Gregorii Kozlov, Sylvia Hochfield, New York: Random House, 1995). In 2010 and 2009 he was awarded the Clarion Award for Cultural Journalism. In 2009 he was awarded the The Society of Silurians Excellence in Journalism Award.
