Description

A Master's Thesis written by Tarik Gaafar at the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Austrian National Library. The subject of the thesis is Nazi provenance research at the University Library of the Vienna University of Agricultural Sciences and Tarik Gaafar was assisted by Christian Mertens. As part of this thesis, a Nazi provenance research project was prepared at the Library of the University of Agricultural Sciences (BOKU UB) and its implementation encouraged.

The first part of the thesis provides a brief outline of the history of the University and Library just before and during the Nazi period. This is followed by a theoretical section on provenance research with the emphasis on Nazi looted property. Together these two elements combine into the second part of the thesis whose focus is to determine the starting point of the project. Possibie sources are reviewed and their usefulness assessed. Amongst these sources are archival records and oral histories as well as the accession registers of the books in the main part of the Library. These latter proved the most useful, showing when and where volumes arrived - their year of purchase, origin, price and inventory date - enabling suspicious items to be identified. If stolen works are found, they will be returned to their owners.
