Dissent and Displacement is about storytelling and the way we reflect on our lives.

Inspired by the museum's German Expressionist collections and the artist's refugee heritage, contemporary printmaker Monica Petzal explores through her art the themes of opposition, persecution and persistence.

Interweaving threads of family, politics, culture and art, her narratives range from the rise of National Socialism in 1930's Germany to a Syrian refugee doctor living in Leicester today.

The late Margarete Klopfleisch (1911 -82) who's bold, hand-carved, wooden and stone sculptured figures echo the work of Käthe Kollwitz, explored similar themes, with emphasis on human struggle and the pathos of childhood. A wooden sculpture ('Mother and Children' approx. 1963.) was recently acquired by Leicester Museums and will be included in the exhibition.
