Description

Abstract:

English guide translation:

The present essay develops the thesis that a turn towards provenance is currently taking place, and that provenance could even develop into a new paradigm in the cultural sciences and humanities. The author proposes the term "provenance turn" for this. Based on the finding that provenance research, i.e. the investigation of the origin and (ownership) history of cultural assets and objects of all kinds, has always been part of the methodological canon of art history science, the article analyses the reasons for the current economic situation of provenance research and outlines its future development potential. Provenance proves to be connected to numerous cultural studies and humanities subjects, disciplines and discourses and should therefore be investigated in transdisciplinary cooperation. In contrast to the "iconic turn", which was limited to the academic field and has had little or no impact on museum practice, the "provenance turn" will have a lasting and profound impact on university art history as well as practical museum work.
