Research into cultural property missing from the archive
The Magdeburg Municipal Archive has undertaken research into its war-related
losses. The missing material is listed in the 1995 publication by Tobias von
Elsner, Alles verbrannt? Die verlorenen Gemälde des Kaiser Friedrich
Museums Magdeburg (Did Everything Burn? The Lost Paintings of the Kaiser
Friedrich Museum in Magdeburg). A copy of the publication is available from
the Central Registry. In addition, the list and a brief background
on looting from the archive's wartime storage location at the Neustaßfurt
salt mine can be consulted online, and the archive has also published its losses
on the Lost Art Internet
Database, the German website on looted art.
Most of the missing material is not listed individually. The archive aims to eventually list all records separately, but is unable to undertake this work at present. It has so far created individual entries for one of the missing collections (the archives of the Guericke and Alemann families) on the Lost Art Internet Database.
