Description
The Department of Rare Books and Manuscripts of the Moscow University Library was established in 1946. Today the Department's holdings consist of 220,000 items, making this one of the largest and most representative depositories of its kind.

The manuscript part of the main collection holds about 3,000 items, comprising Greek, Latin, French, German, Russian and Oriental manuscripts from the tenth to the twentieth century.
The collection of European printed books consists of about 15,000 copies from the fifteenth to the twentieth century, including 124 incunabula printed in Venice, Basel, Nuremberg and other places and more than 700 paleotypes. Several thousand copies constitute the collection of the nineteenth century books and periodicals.

The Library's holdings are relevant for research on looted art, as the provenance of some book collections is not fully clarified. The staff of the Department is especially interested in collaboration with university and college libraries that develop databases and electronic catalogues of rare books, manuscripts and archives.
