Title
Swiss Institute for Art Research (Schweizerisches Institut für Kunstwissenschaft,
Institut Suisse pour l'etude de l'art)
Description
Founded in 1951, the Swiss Institute for Art Research is a centre for research
in the fields of art history and technology. It specializes the work of Swiss
artists and is based in Zürich, with a branch-office located at the University
of Lausanne, in Francophone Switzerland.
The Swiss Institute for Art Research initiates, conceives and carries out research projects. It collects archives that might be useful for scientific research: newspaper clippings, press releases, invitations to exhibit openings, price lists, and correspondence. The documents are registered in the Institute's database along with key dates concerning biographical information.
The Institute is continually inventorying works of art and regularly updates
a well-documented photographic library and extensive information on the provenance
of Swiss works of art. It also carries out inventories of whole collections.
The documentation of artworks in private collections is a valuable research
tool.
In its library, which is open to the public, the Institute has collected all
the important works on Swiss art, as well as works of general interest for international
research. Its periodicals collection is one of its major assets.
The central office in Zürich provides all of the services available including
access to the photographic library, SIKART database, archives, and library.
